Many thanks for those who have taken the time to find out this information and list it here for all to see – i have lived next door to brown edge church now for 12 years and have often wondered why this man was buried here, and so close to the church entrance. he must have made a huge impression on the villagers. Its great to see thse pictures of the burial, which makes me wonder whether my great great grandfather smith is amongst the mourners
best wishes and thank you

anyone remember my grandad maurice nixon married to ann holdcroft. he had 2 dogs when i was growing up blacky and prince who he often took to the pub. also the brown edge workmens club off greenfield ave.
I remember Turners buses very well, I live next door in the Holly Bush, I remember the family, it way my dads bus service Sam got from my grandad when my dad was very ill in hospital, my grandad did not thing my dad was going to get better, so he sold his bus service, then he got better, and went to do some driving for Sam Turners when they were short of a driver, if Marie is still with us, say hello for me, I know a lot about Turners buses. I was in Brown Edge a few weeks ago, had a lovely lunch Holly Bush. Geoff Burgess
Geofrey Burgess a name from the past growing up we used to have some good times and bad i was thinking about Forky [Reg Eardley] i have not seen him for hongs
Sadly Marie and Michael have both passed away as have all the second generation. I still own the house and used it as offices until recently. I rent it out now.
Do you have a photo of your dad and granddad or any of the buses as I want to do an article and include it in the website

So shocked to hear that both Marie and Michael have passed away, I knew both very well, infact Marie Married a relative of mine Gerald Tatton I think they divorced and if i remember correctly Marie had the wool shop in Norton Green. Remember Turners busses too, they used to stop and wait for me most mornings outside my house (cant remember his name think it was Bill we called him Little Bill i think) well he would shout “HEY UP HERE COMES BLOODY 10 to 9” wonderful memories
Are Billy Chakdwick and John Chadwick related to the Chadwicks who ran a bus service at Mow Cop.
One of the family was a ships captain for the Leyland Line/
Iam related to the Chadwicke through my grandmother Maria Hammond nee Jeffries.
I rememeber this, we playing in the field at the back of the Holly Bush when it came over the top of the houses, we all ran as fast as we could to see it, and that night half the village nicked lots of the aircraft, perspect winds went, we were making rings out it for months.

My Mum & Dad were the Licence of the Holly Bush for 32 years, they had five children there, June, Geoffrey, Micheal, Diana & Kitty, sadly Micheal & Diana are no longer with us, June lives in Crew, Geoffrey in Blackpool, and Kitty in Tunstall, we all had great live, I wish I still lived there, it is a great little pub the Holly Bush, and a loverly village, I love coming back, and seeing my old fiend John Chadwick, and many more.
Dear Geoff, my mum, Margery Phillips, was a friend of June’s as a child. Her mum, my grandma, Lucy Phillips used to work behind the bar sometimes. This was before WW2 when mum and her parents moved to Manchester. I have an old black and white photo of Mum and June as young children. I would be happy to share a copy with you or June.
Kind regards
Annette Traverse-Healy
My mum, Margery Phillips, knew June Burgess as a child. Mum used to sleepover with her sometimes at the Holly Bush when her mum (my grandma Lucy Phillips) worked behind the bar. I would love to contact June if possible to hear her memories. I think I may even have an old photo of her and mum!
Sorry, Junes son, he lives Haslington, Near Crew, it is that long since I have see hime I had forgot, nice lad is Lee, if I do see hime I will tell you were asking about hime.
Geoff
Sorry to hear about Marie I was very fond of her, I will see what photo’s I can find, do not hold much hope, Do you live in Brown Edge, and do you know Margret Bourne, if you do and she has a computer would give my E mail address and ask her to E mail me, she was my sisters best friend.
Happy New Year to you and your Familey.
Geoff
You might remember me ? I am Michael Turner the brother of Peter, Brian and Barbara Turner. Our late parents were Tom and Nancy.
Dad used to organise day trips to the seaside with Turner’s Buses during August Bank Holidays.
Some of my fondest memories of my life in Brown Edge involved The Holly Bush Pub where my friends and I used to gather outside before we became of age to consume alcohol. I now live in Hastings East Sussex where I have been a local Borough Councillor since 2010. Lots of memories to exchange should you wish to do so..
Hi Geoff just read the very interesting story about Turner’s Buses and notice you are making enquiries about Dianne’s friend Margaret Bourne, I know this lady very well as she became my Wife, Margaret, I must tell you cannot switch a computer on
(no interest) but you can certainly email her via myself.
May I also say that Dianne was a best friend of Margaret & Myself.
Kind regards.

Hi,
My 3x Great Grandfather was Thomas Russell, a friend of Hugh Bourne and alos instrumental in the Primitive Methodist movement. I am currently reading his autobiography and on p.11 it says that he missioned at Brownedge, and formed a society of above a dozen members. Can anyone tell me if there is any mention of Thomas in the chapel there?
There have been over 5 different Chapels here in Brown Edge of which 2 are still operating. Hugh Bourne’s Chapel closed and the congregation opened another chapel ie Hill Top Chapel which my ggg grandfather and his family gifted various items. If you could tell me some names of the congregation I could perhaps recognise them.
I wonder if you have in your records any mention of Daniel Shufflebotham (my 3 x gt grandfather) who believe assisted Hugh Bourne in the building of a chapel possibly at Mow Cop.
I am currently researching the family tree of Hugh Bourne as I am part of the Bourne family from Staffordshire and am endeavouring to make a link. In the Memoirs of the Life and Labours of the late Venerable Hugh Bourne, it states that Hugh Bourne’s father (Joseph Bourne) and Daniel Shubotham’s father were cousins and that Hugh met up with Daniel when he bought an area of woodland for timber dealing at Harrisehead in 1800. I hope this helps you- however, I am at a loss to work out the family link between Daniel’s father and Hugh Bourne’s father to make them cousins- do you have any info from the Shubotham family that can help? Did Daniel’s father marry a sister of Joseph Bourne? He did have a sister Mary Bourne- and I can see there was a marriage at some point between a Roger shubotham and Mary – that produced Daniel in 1770. Any help greatly appreciated! Daniel then gave Hugh Bourne some of his farmland to build the first chapel at Harrisehead in 1801.
Caroline
Although I have definitely seen Daniel Shufflebotham linked to Hugh Bourne further research indicates it may be Daniel Shubotham. However you mention Shufflebothams in Biddulph – I have Daniel’s son John (my 2 x gt grandfather) in the 1841 census at New Bent, Biddulph with Thos & Hanh Brough – Farmer. It would be interesting if you could provide any information on these names.
Many thanks
Bob
Hi, i think we might be related, my mum says sam turner was my grandfathers couson. James Turner, He had a brother George and sister Rachel. Rachels daughter still lives in the family home in Brown Edge. I passed a Turners bus the other day and my Mum started to fill me in on the family tree. Nice to see the old bus still running Thanks Linda

Many thanks
3 years ago I visited your site Potteries people researching my family history but am having trouble getting back into the site now. I would be most grateful if you would advise/accept my access to the Pointon’s of Biddulph family tree. My current email address is davidwpointon@gmail.com. I am a direct descendant of Luke Pointon born in Dane in Shaw 1840.

The Lump of Coal. Richard Sheldon (1839-1928) was probably the longest serving landlord of any of the Brown Edge pubs. He was there from 1862 until 1909 when his son George took over. Not sure how long George was there but he died in 1934. His father-in-law (Basnett) was the licensee of the Rose and Crown at Stanley in the late 1800’s.
Is the pub still there as my girlfriend is a Sheldon and it was her great great grandfather who you are speaking about in your message please email me thanks… Lee.
I’m assuming that it was George that you were referring to. There is/was a Sheldon family tree on the Brown edge website which might be of interest but I have experienced difficulties in opening it recently. It might pay you to contact Pete turner.
Hello, I wonder if you can help or advise please? I am looking for the burial place of my brother who died at birth in 1960. We came to live at Cockshead Cottages, Norton Green, when my Dad left the Royal Navy and lived with Grandma Esther Potts. I was almost 2 years old when the baby John Potts was born and sadly died. We have been told that he was buried in with either Daniel Savage or his wife Elizabeth. i have looked around the churchyard a couple of times and can not find him. Esther was buried there in 1980.
Thanking you in anicipation, Pauline
It seems Sam is my great-grandfather and passed the buses onto my paternal grandfather Edwin and his brothers. I have very vague memories of the buses from the late 80s early 90s so it’s a really nice experience to read about the history of my family.
Any other stories about our family would be greatly appreciated.
Please don’t forget there sister my mum olwyn it seems she is never mentioned but played a big part in the family I’m pauline Evans her daughter my grandad was sam

Hi Simon
Hope you are well. Quite a few stories I could tell you about your Grandfather and My Godfather Edwin. At some point i am threatening to have a Get together all descendants of James Turner your GGG Grandfather. Should be interesting.
Peter Roy Turner
Having now lived in Cornwall for some 29 years, I found this a very interesting article. I am more familiar now with a lot of the places referred to in Cornwall in the article than I am with those of my native surroundings. Indeed I recall a few summers ago being confronted by Peter Turner in High Street here in town, I am embarrassed to say that I did not recognise him. It’s very odd to realise that I have now spent more time living in Cornwall than I did in Brown Edge, it’s almost like having lived two separate lives. Anyway, I still love to visit my home village and always return to Cornwall loaded down with oatcakes and the odd Wrights pie. All the best to you all, Paul Whiston, Coxswain, RNLI St Ives lifeboat.
Hi Paul
I see you most years. Last year I was having a pint outside the Sloop talking to some ex Halfords lads I met and you came past in a Grey A30 van!
Pete
Hi Pete
Yep, it was an A35 van. Had it for a few months & sold it on. It went back up to Derbyshire.
I have a blue Austin (Morris) 1000 pickup which I use most of the time when it’s fine.
Next time you are down, give me a call & if I can, I’ll join you for a pint.
Regards Paul
PS It was great to meet the Queen last week, thanks for putting something in the parish magazine, plenty in the Cornishman & West Briton but not read by many in Brown Edge.
