Outside the South Porch door of St Annes, Brown Edge is a gravestone marked:-
William TREBLOCK, Gospel News Evangelist,
23 July 1892, 23
Who was this young evangelist and how did he come to be here in Brown Edge?
What we do know was that he was a Cornishman who died here in Brown Edge, his gravestone is substantial and in a prominent position. The rest is shrouded in mystery.
If you check the census returns there is no Treblock in Cornwall or anywhere else for that matter. The most likely spelling is Trebilcock and there are several candidates listed from Gwenapp, Illogan, Colan, Truro and Feock. The last one however is not present in the 1901 census so is a real candidate.
Checking the Death certificates it says that indeed his name is Trebilcock and William John
We would be interested to hear from anyone who has any information regarding this mystery.
It is noteworthy that occasionally there are still flowers left on his grave.
